The day when you got your first pimple, you were probably bombarded with advice from your mother, aunts, cousins, friends, etc. Everyone has had a suggestion or two, and while are some great, some of these are pure fiction.

Here are a few of those common myths:

  • “The more expensive the product is, the more effective it is”

This is pure fiction. Many skincare products have similar, if not the same ingredients. The more expensive products are pricier than others simply because they are branded, have fancy packaging and nicer fragrance. Just because a product isn’t one of the top 10 skincare products doesn’t mean it can’t work for you.

  • “The harder you exfoliate, the clearer your skin will be”

Although exfoliating your skin promotes good skin health, scrubbing excessively till you bleed only irritates and damages your skin. Over-exfoliation also dries out your skin by removing the essential oils needed for hydration and makes your skin more susceptible to infection.

  • “If it burns, it works”

Some people believe that if they do not feel anything, nothing is happening. So, if the product burns, tingles or stings, they are pleased and are willing withstand the pain or discomfort as they think they are one step closer to having clear skin. This cannot be any further from the truth. The skin is a very sensitive organ and if products cause a “burn,” it may result in temporary or permanent damage to your skin.

  • “You don’t need sunscreen in the winter or when it’s cloudy”

Just because you cannot see the sun, or feel the effects of its rays does not mean it is not there. The sun is constantly emitting ultraviolet rays which causes wrinkles, lines, dark spots and cancer if proper precautions, such as wearing sunscreen, are not taken.

  • “I can eat anything and be acne free as long as I use my facial products”

Even though you may use one of the top 10 skin care products in Malaysia, your diet contributes greatly to the condition of your skin as certain foods can induce or prevent acne. Sugars, carbs, fats, and alcohol should be avoided and substituted for foods rich in nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants to promote healthy skin.

  • “If your skin isn’t ‘tight’ after washing, it isn’t clean”

Stop right there! This is an indication that you have stripped your skin of its natural oils which are responsible for keeping the skin moisturized and healthy-looking. This can also exacerbate acne-causing sebum excretions and worsen any existing breakout.

  • “If you see a pimple, pop it!”

Popping pimples may increase its supply of oils, bacteria, and dirt which would make it worse and could even lead to scarring. Cleanse normally and avoid touching the pimple. It will disappear with time.

  • “Moisturizing only clogs pores”

Actually, using light moisturizers on your whole face prevents your skin from producing too much sebum and cause acne. It also helps to keep your skin looking hydrated and fresh.

  • “Acne treatment works better at night”

Acne does not sleep during the day nor do products only respond at night. Instead, you should be using these products once in the morning, afternoon and night to remove all the grime accumulated during the daytime.

It is important to distinguish between fact and fiction when it comes to skin care because many of these myths only waste your time, effort and money.
